From Reference to Pattern: A Case Study - Pt 1

Description

This is part 1 of a guide by me offering some general advice on how to approach any given pattern given some references. I’ll be attempting to take you through the process of how I made the body for my most recent plush, Yukito-kun. Now you might be thinking, “But that’s such a simple body, certainly there isn’t that much to making something like that?” And yes, for all intents and purposes, for this particular body pattern, a mathematical approach may be overkill for most people. However, if you’re not familiar with how to take a bunch of measurements off a reference, starting out simple is essential; I use these exact same techniques to make stuff like the Jirachi plush, a plush whose proportions were quite difficult to get just right, and which I only got right because of my mathematical approach. Even if you don’t love Yukito-kun as much as I do, I think you’ll learn something from this tutorial.

Part 2 of this tutorial will be coming soon! It'll cover patterning legs on a plushie, which can be a bit tricky if you aren't familiar with certain practices.

Also available in a rebloggable format on Tumblr.
